UK CONSERVATIVES CAN LEARN A LOT FROM TRUMP VICTORY - POPCON SURVEY SHOWS

PopCon's most recent survey released today, shows 88% of it's opinion panel members are happy Trump won and are full of ideas as to what lessons UK conservatives can take away from the victory.

In our latest survey (running from 22nd November to 27th November) we asked the question "What position best describes your view of the recent US election?". 88% of the panel are happy Trump won.  59% told us they were Trump enthusiasts with a further 39% 'wanting Trump to win, but not with much enthusiasm'.

REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

In a follow up question asking how people feel about the prospects for the USA since the Trump win, 52% are very optimistic and 34% 'somewhat optimistic' for the USA.

When asked, "Which of these make you feel the most optimistic about a Trump Presidency?", the results were fairly evenly spread across five areas.

20% - Anti-woke stance

19% - Stance on immigration

16% - Anti-establishment stance

16% - Stance on state spending

15% - Stance on energy policy

9% - Stance on foreign affairs

  5% - Nothing positive / don't know

Open-ended text responses also cited personal factors - 'Trump's love of his country', 'bravery' and 'willingness to take on the elite ruling classes to really make change happen '- as further reasons why the PopCon panel is are optimistic about the future of the USA.

ONE NOTABLE AREA OF CONCERN

30% have some concerns about Donald Trumps stance on foreign affairs. Open-ended text responses in the survey clearly show however, that these concerns relate primarily to 1. how the Labour Government has interacted with president-elect Trump to date and whether Trump will punish the UK with trade tariffs and 2. the possible impact on Ukraine

LESSONS FOR THE UK?

When asked what lessons the UK conservatives can learn from Trump's victory, the panel did not hold back with thoughts and ideas. Common themes include "being honest with the electorate", "listening to what real people care about", "a willingness to be radical" and "having clear policies - not fudge - on areas such as the cost of living, immigration and net zero costs".
