Hercule Poirot solves a new mystery (with apologies to Agatha Christie)
Captain Hastings looked at Poirot with a furrowed brow. “I say, Poirot, did you see that Mr Rishi Sunak has said that he would have quite liked to leave the European Convention on Human Rights and abandon the mandatory Net Zero target? But dash it all, the chap was PM for quite a while and said nothing much about either. What on earth is going on?”.
Hercule Poirot smiled. “Mon ami, the clue is in the status of Monsieur Sunak. When he was your prime minister he could do and say nothing because he was terrified that those savage beasts of MPs in his party would do away with him. Mais now he is an ex-prime minister and can do and say as he wishes without fear of the consequences. It is the ‘ex’ that is at the heart of this case.”
“Well I think a chap should say and do what he believes in, whether he is in or out of office. Got to be straight with people, surely?”.
Poirot smiled again. “And that, mon ami, is why neither you nor I are politicians. We are instead seekers after truth.”
