SUELLA BRAVERMAN: WHO ADVICE TREATED AS GOSPEL AND THEY GOT IT WRONG

Telegraph: 29th March 2024: Report on Suella Braverman's views on Covid and another unelected body seeking to usurp UK government

Advice by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on lockdowns must not be taken as gospel, Suella Braverman said.

In an article for The Telegraph, the former home secretary said policymakers needed to be free to consider “legitimate scientific challenge” to the established view in a future pandemic.

“We now know that the WHO got it wrong during the pandemic, so we need to ensure that legitimate scientific challenge is considered by decision-makers during the next pandemic,” she said.

It follows warnings by MPs that Britain risks “signing away” its powers over pandemic policy to “unelected” WHO officials... It is feared that a new “pandemic treaty”, which is currently being drawn up by the UN agency, could bounce the UK into locking down society faster during a future global health crisis.

Mrs Braverman said she believed that Boris Johnson took the only decision available to him when he ordered the first lockdown in spring 2020.

However, she said the UK needed to learn the lessons so that children were “better” supported to attend school in order to avoid the mass closures that disrupted millions of children’s education... Mrs Braverman also called for families to have an “enforceable right” to challenge “harsh” decisions by care homes that saw their elderly relatives dying alone... She also hoped that in the next pandemic, state aid supporting businesses through furlough schemes could be better targeted at companies that could cope with the crisis.

...“What’s clear is that we must be much better prepared and able to take better decisions to protect us all, and that includes protecting our precious freedoms.”
