ROBERT JENRICK: BLAIR HANDED POWER TO LAWYERS AND QUANGOCRATS

"Parliament must take back control"

Telegraph: 26th December 2025: Shadow Justice Minister, Robert Jenrick, writes excellent article essentially reiterating the PopCon analysis.

"...if Blair were to be asked for his legacy, he might reasonably say that those who later proudly declared themselves to be the “heirs to Blair” entrenched his profound changes... Gold-plating international law, the ever-growing quangos, and endless judicial review...

...Liberated from the European Union, the UK was supposed to be free to forge its own path. Instead, we are wading through treacle... over the last two decades we have seen the transfer of power away from elected politicians to unelected and unaccountable bodies... There are now over 400 quangos, which account for a third of all state spending...Many have developed minds of their own...

...Compounding the quangocracy, poorly drafted laws – like the Human Rights Act, Equality Act and Climate Change Act – have given judges significantly more power to decide what ministers can and can’t do... The threat of legal challenge now hangs over every government decision like the sword of Damocles...

...Over many years ministers have been hogtied, law by law, case by case, like Gulliver in Lilliput. It’s little wonder the British people increasingly feel that nothing ever happens and voting is pointless... British conservatives today don’t need to yell “stop!” We need to yell “go back!” We must restore parliamentary sovereignty...

...While politicians are told never to comment on judgments, some judges appear cheerfully political...There is little point in leaving the ECHR only to be frustrated by these activist judges at home. Judges should not be appointed by the Blairite quango, the Judicial Appointments Committee. The responsibility must be restored to the Lord Chancellor...

...To fix Britain, it’s time to trust the people again. It’s time for a great restoration of parliamentary sovereignty."
