How can Britain reclaim its potential?

PopConversations is a series of online conversations with leading figures who are shaping UK conservative thinking.

On Monday 23rd March at 7pm, PopCon Director Mark Littlewood was joined by the Rt Hon Steve Baker, a key architect of Brexit, co-founder of Vote Leave, and Privy Councillor.

Steve served as the Conservative MP for Wycombe for 14 years (2010–2024), during which he held ministerial roles in the Department for Exiting the European Union (2017–2018), the Northern Ireland Office (2022–2024), and the Cabinet Office (2024).

As a backbencher, he ran several notable campaigns, co-founding Conservatives for Britain in 2015 and later chairing the influential European Research Group (ERG) to drive the case for leaving the EU.

A committed Eurosceptic Steve is renowned for his principled advocacy of sovereignty, free markets, and limited government.

Today he is the founder and Chairman of "Fighting for a Free Future," arguing that Britain must fundamentally rethink governance, economic policy, and the role of the state to overcome stagnation and reclaim its potential.

Mark Littlewood explored Steve’s core ideas on what it will take to get Britain back on track; the relative importance of the economy vs government restructure; if there is now a social democratic consensus; and whether the Conservative Party or Reform UK offer the best prospect currently for British rejuvenation.
