THIS EVENT HAS ENDED: WATCH RECORDING HERE

PopConversations is a series of online conversations with leading figures who are shaping UK conservative thinking.

On Tuesday, 20th May at 7pm, we were delighted to host former Conservative Deputy Leader Lord Lilley. Peter Lilley, The Right Hon the Lord Lilley, was a Conservative MP from 1983–2017. He was appointed by Margaret Thatcher as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in 1990 before John Major asked him to be Social Security Secretary from 1992–1997, during which time he introduced Incapacity Benefit.

A longstanding eurosceptic who strongly supported Brexit he has also been a long-term critic of mass migration. Peter Lilley has long specialised in economic policy, social security reform, and been a renowned climate change sceptic, notably opposing the 2008 Climate Change Act.

PopCon Director, Mark Littlewood, quizzed Peter about his thoughts on Sir Keir Starmer's EU deal, immigration, net zero targets and welfarism as well as the history of the Conservative Party and what it needs to do to rebuild trust with voters.

A fascinating conversation with a jaw-dropping revelation from Peter on the reason why he was one of the only five MPs who voted against the 2008 Climate Change Act.
