PopConversations is a series of online conversations with leading figures who are shaping UK conservative thinking.

On Tuesday, 20th May at 7pm, we are delighted to be hosting former Conservative Deputy Leader Lord Lilley. Peter Lilley, The Right Hon the Lord Lilley, was a Conservative MP from 1983–2017. He was appointed by Margaret Thatcher as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in 1990 before John Major asked him to be Social Security Secretary from 1992–1997, during which time he introduced Incapacity Benefit.

A longstanding eurosceptic who strongly supported Brexit he has also been a long-term critic of mass migration. Peter Lilley has long specialised in economic policy, social security reform, and been a renowned climate change sceptic, notably opposing the Climate Change Act 2008.

Mark Littlewood will ask him about the changes in the Conservative Party over the last four decades, how the Conservatives can rebuild trust and what lessons can be learned from previous electoral disasters. Has Kemi gone far enough on scrapping net zero? Are the Labour plans to reduce the benefits’ bill fit for purpose? Will Keir Starmer smash the gangs – and if not how can we stop mass migration? Can the Conservatives rebuild trust from such a low base? How does Kemi compare to William Hague under whom Lord Lilley was Shadow Chancellor and deputy leader? Where did things go wrong – and is there light at the end of the tunnel? This live conversation will be an exploration of Conservative values, principles and policies, how they got lost and how they can be restored. Participants will be able to put their own questions to be asked by Mark on the night. This will be an unmissable event for all interested in the politics of the right and how it can be restored.
