PopConversations is a series of online conversations with leading figures who are shaping UK conservative thinking.

 

On Monday 23rd June at 7pm we were delighted to host Shadow Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, the Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP.

 

Robert is the Member of Parliament for Newark and one of the most prominent Conservative MPs having only narrowly lost to Kemi Badenoch last autumn in the leadership election.

 

As Shadow Justice Secretary, he has made a name for himself by forcing government u-turns and championing strict immigration controls, advocating for a legally binding migration cap and exiting the ECHR.

 

Robert has taken a campaigning approach to his justice brief, pushing for systematic reform and challenging race-based sentencing rules.

 

His consistent popularity with the Conservative membership, well ahead of all his colleagues with a +63.3 approval rating, fuels speculation that if there is another leadership contest he would likely be Kemi Badenoch’s successor.

 

PopCon Director, Mark Littlewood, asked Robert about campaigning to effect change in Opposition. Are we suffering from a 2-tier justice system? Is the Supreme Court fit for purpose or must the next government repeal Tony Blair’s constitutional changes?
