"Former prime minister claims she ‘wasn’t captain of the ship’ during short-lived premiership"

 

Telegraph: 3rd September 2025: The Newspaper reports on an interview the former PM has given with Sky’s The Master Investor Podcast.

"Liz Truss has claimed that the Bank of England was in charge while she was prime minister. Ms Truss – whose time in Downing Street lasted just 49 days in autumn 2022 – insisted she “wasn’t captain of the ship” throughout her premiership...

...In an interview with Sky’s The Master Investor Podcast with Wilfred Frost, Ms Truss was asked about being “captain of the ship” as the markets descended into chaos. She replied: “You said I was captain of the ship. The fact is I wasn’t captain of the ship because I wasn’t running monetary policy – the Bank of England were running monetary policy". 

“I’m very happy to take responsibility for things provided I have the full ability to actually control them. I didn’t have the ability to control them.

“There was information I didn’t have. There was a Bank of England governor who did not take responsibility for financial stability, which is part of his mandate. He hasn’t been held to account for that at all.” 

“The fact is the Bank of England, whereas they go out of their way to support what Rachel Reeves is doing… They went out of their way to blame me for what happened.”

Last year, Ms Truss called for an investigation into the Bank of England after its own analysts found the majority of the bond market crash in her tenure was caused by dangerous practices in the pensions industry..."
