SIR MICHAEL ELLIS: THE RADICAL RIGHT-WING REFORMS NEEDED TO FIX BRITAINS DEMOCRATIC DEFICIT

"Our state is broken, but there are 10 ways to save the UK from the road to ruin"

Telegraph: 21st September 2025: Conservative politician and barrister (and former Attorney General), Sir Michael Ellis, rows behind PopCon on what's broken and suggesting some good ideas on how to fix it.

"The British state is broken... There is a serious democratic deficiency between what the general public has been demanding for years and what elected governments have been capable of delivering – even if they have the nerve to try... Monumental reform is required. The power of courts and judges must be curbed, and Britain must be willing to pull out of the treaties and international courts that too often bind politicians’ hands.

If such reform is attempted, the Left will scream that a fascist dictatorship is being introduced, but the opposite would in fact be true.

It would be a reaffirmation of democracy. Many of the UK institutions that do not work today were only introduced in the last 25 years, via Tony Blair’s constitutional vandalism. They are hardly ancient pillars of our constitution.

There are at least 10 radical reforms needed, involving total abolition or root-and-branch change..."

      1. Abolish the Supreme Court...
      2. Hire and fire judges...
      3. Oust the ECHR and Human Rights Act...
      4. Withdraw from treaties...
      5. Overhaul judicial reviews...
      6. Civil Service reform...
      7. Abolish operational independence for police...
      8. Protect free speech...
      9. Reform the House of Lords...
      10. Put other democracies first...
